Historically trusts were used as a vehicle to protect assets and to ensure that they passed to the intended individuals.
In recent years, the Government has attacked trusts as a means of avoiding taxation and have changed significantly the way trusts are taxed.
That is not to say that trusts are still a very useful vehicle to protect assets and where careful planning is undertaken, can help mitigate future IHT charges.
